  • Sure. And that means recognizing when you shouldn’t put yourself in uncomfortable situations.

Would you encourage people with eating disorders to buy lots of snacks and hang out in the pantry? Just control your mind?

To be honest, I kind if envy that you and your mind are so aligned. I’m not so lucky. I can’t own Doritos, because I’ll either eat the entire bag, or I’ll think about them to the point where it’s annoying. So I just avoid them. It’s sad, but it’s what I have to work with.

  • Distractions can completely derail motivation. It doesn’t happen to me because of women at the gym, but if I accidentally have the wrong intrusive thought my motivation is gone and the whole workout ends. I’ve stopped mid run and just walked out.

Maybe you’re neurotypical and don’t struggle with this. But not everyone can just “man up and power through”, as you’re implying should be done.

  • “I’m starving, but instead of eating I’m going to try and solve world hunger first”

You can do two things at the same time. And if you’re really struggling with your internal thoughts, the answer isn’t skip the gym. The answer is find a gym where you’re comfortable, and continue to work on your mental issues.

“Just do better” isn’t a strategy for improvement. It’s a cop out for those who don’t want to think about solving the problem.
