• In what world are two women having a conversation on their own interested in a random dude on a train anyway?

    • Was going to say. This seems like the most polite kind of person you’re going to meet on the subway. Dude’s not manspreading, not gawking, not trying to get their attention, literally bumped up against a woman and not trying to cop a feel.

This is the Ideal Male Commuter. You may not like him, but this is what peak performance looks like.

I imagine their conversation’s about writer modes for emacs.

  • They’re all weird. Everyone knows you’re supposed to stare into the abyss until it’s time to get off at your stop.

    • You mean the abyssal screen of one’s smartphone?

        • “Oh wow! This is the most interesting power pole i think i have ever seen. WAIT!.. This other power pole is much more interesting!”

    • yeah, I’m also highly confused about the point of the picture.

it could be a joke if the women would show some actual interest in the guy and he ignored them, but here it’s just ppl minding their own business.

  • A bit unrelated to the joke, but I am sad at how acceptable it has become taking pictures of people in public to make fun of them.

  • “You’re near a woman and aren’t sexually assaulting them? What are you gay?”

    • I think that is the implication.

Iirc there are some studies saying that people in general are happier when they make small talk with strangers on the train, which i definitely would not expect because i would want to be left alone.

I can imagine a version of this where the two are talking in a way signifying it isn’t a private conversation, and the computer guy says something interesting that adds to the discussion, and then all three have an enjoyable social interaction after which he goes back to coding, or whatever.

I think the fantasy that a man could be so attractive as to chat up two women strangers on a train is the kind of idea that leads to harassment.

  • He’s respecting their privacy in a place where they HAVE to share space with him. Good guy contributor.

  • men pay attention to women they get roasted; men ignore women and they get roasted.

it’s almost like there’s a battle of the sexes going on that’s tipped one way because nobody dares speak out on the men’s side because they’ll get labeled an incel or ‘part of the problem.’

neither of those women are worth paying attention to.

    • Agreed. The woman in the middle should tell the other to please stop interrupting and continue pair programming

    • Public transport etiquette is not standing in front of the door while people get out. Not hitting on every girl that sits next to you is like… basic human decency.

  • Why would he bother risking harassment allegations from strangers?

  • OH! When a man does it he’s “based” but when I’m too busy contributing to FOSS I’m “frigid”. Rude!
